Whispering Quilts tells the story of a young Dahomean girl who was sold or traded into slavery on the West African Slave Coast in the late 18th century, brought to America, and bought by a Southern rice planter; she is renamed Charlotte. Although a new identity was forced on the young girl, she does not lose her sense of who she was: an African queen, and a warrior. Half a century later, her progeny attempt an escape from the brutality of the southern plantation to freedom in Canada in 1850. To fail in this attempt means possible torture or death... Will they make it?

This 19th-century historical fiction, set during the pre-Civil War period of the Antebellum South, tells the story of one branch of Charlotte’s progeny. This is a tale of a time when unimaginable savagery, unmitigated abuse, institutionalized racism, mental, physical, and psychological tortures were common tools of punishment used by slave owners against the enslaved – young and old.

This is also an inspiring tale of the tender love that bound an enslaved family together and tells how the enslaved African Americans coped with their bondage to survive. It is a story of how—through an Underground Railroad system—courageous White abolitionists, Quakers, and people of goodwill broke the law to help fugitive slaves escape their bondage to find freedom in the North and Canada, aided by coded quilts and Negro spirituals.

Although a work of fiction; most of the experiences of the main characters are rooted in historical facts based on firsthand accounts of former slaves, as recorded in the Slave Narratives and other historical sources. Many abolitionists and places mentioned in connection with the Underground Railroad are historically accurate.

Every day across America and, perhaps, across the globe, educators bring to their adult learning classrooms a pedagogical style that is inappropriate for the adult learner. There are distinct differences between adults and young learners in their educational needs, purposes for learning, and in their ways of learning. Levi H. Dowling (May 18, 1844 – August 13, 1911) was the son of a conservative Ohio preacher of Scottish-Welsh descent. From a very young age, the lad was of a profoundly spiritual and meditative nature, which defined him throughout his life and career. He experienced a series of three visions, the first of which appeared in his early youth; he was told in these visions to “build a white city”.

For over 40 years, through meditation practices, he prepared himself to access the Akashic Records, which is purported to be the “Book of God’s Remembrances”. In his later years, Levi Dowling claimed to have accessed these records. The Encyclopedia Britannica describes the Akashic Records as “memories of all events, actions, thoughts, and feelings that have occurred since the beginning of time”. These memories exist in an astral light, which only certain individuals have the ability to access.

The Akasha is a concept derived from Hinduism, and is believed to be a primordial substance from which the universe was created; everything—every action that ever was—is stored as a record in the Akasha.

To a Christian, this concept is familiar: “every idle word that men may speak, they shall give an account of it on the Day of Judgment (Matthew 12:36). John the Elder, in Revelation 20:12, reported what he experienced in a vision while he was on the Isle of Patmos: “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.” So, apparently, there are records being kept in some form on the works of every human being who ever lived on earth, and humankind will be judged by their words and works based on these records. After accessing knowledge from the Akashic Records, Levi wrote The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ.

The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ is considered the “white city” for the enlightenment it conferred upon seekers of knowledge. From the Records, Levi was able to reveal hitherto unknown details about the life and ministry of Jesus. For the curious and open-minded, the book is a fascinating read and it challenges us to ask still more questions. For example, if God “changeth not” as He declared in Malachi 3:6, did Divine revelations cease after John wrote what we now refer to as “The Revelation of Jesus Christ”? Or did God continue to reveal hidden mysteries to humankind through men and women across the centuries? If so, might this be one such book? Who decides what revelation from God is, or what is simply fruit from the fertile imagination of man? Let the reader decide…albeit prayerfully.

Having completed the work he was called to do, Dowling died in 1911, the year of the book’s publication.
